Working For A Sustainable Future

The aviation industry is calling on governments around the world to help the industry reduce its carbon footprint. In an open letter organized by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) and co-signed by IATA and ATAG members (which include airlines, airports, aerospace manufacturers and air navigation service providers), the group re-affirms its commitment to its 3 key goals:

  • 1.5% fuel efficiency improvement per year to 2020.
  • Stabilizing net carbon emissions through carbon-neutral growth from 2020.
  • Halving net carbon emissions by 2050 compared to 2005.

Since the goals were set in 2009 a cumulative 600 million tonnes of CO2 have been avoided as a direct result of efforts associated with the industry’s four-pillar strategy of improvements in technology, operations, infrastructure, and the implementation of a global market-based measure (MBM).

And the airline industry is the first industrial sector to agree on a position asking governments to implement a market-based measure to help it manage its carbon footprint.

The letter was signed during ATAG’s Global Sustainable Aviation Summit which was held in Geneva recently and can be viewed in full by going to http://aviationbenefits.org/environmental-efficiency/open-letter .
