Volcanic Explorations on hike to Kilauea
KapohoKine Adventures has recently launched a new tour called the “Elite Volcano Hike” that is available from both Hilo and Kona on Hawaii Island. The new tour leads hikers to Kilauea’s historic 2018 lava flow, an imposing 40 foot tall wall of black lava covering the highway. It then follows the lava flow through a pine forest and down to the sea where the newly altered coastline and cliffs overlook a new black sand beach.
Also on the tour is the crown jewel of the Big Island, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hikers briefly visit the Kilauea Iki Overlook before heading off on foot down the paved road to Keanakakoi, where they can see the effects of the 2018 eruption, which buckled the road and caused cracks and sinkholes. They also get a birds-eye view of the Kilauea Caldera and the enormous Halema‘uma‘u Crater.
Hikers return to civilization at Volcano House for some beautiful views, and follow that up with a stop at the Volcano Winery, the southernmost winery in the United States. They can take a private tour of the vineyard and winery then sample up to eight different types of wines, all with a unique Hawaiian flare. After sampling beverages, they get a
hearty Hawaiian-style BBQ dinner with a complimentary beverage before returning to Hilo or Kona.
