Hotwire.com has unveiled the 10 most popular destinations for Canadian travellers for Family Day 2014.

This year, domestic destinations maintain their popularity, with six of the top 10 cities being domestic locations. While the top five cities on the list remain virtually unchanged from last year, every one of them has experienced a drop in hotel prices since 2013.

Toronto, Ottawa and New York maintained their positions as the first, second and third most popular destinations this year, respectively. Vancouver comes in fourth, overtaking Montreal, and is the biggest mover on price with a 12% year over year drop in average nightly hotel rates. As the incumbents, these destinations are proving themselves to be tried-and-true favourites for Family Day travel. On the other hand, the next group of cities is in a bit more flux.

Coming in at number six this Family Day is Orlando – the ever-popular Floridian city climbs one spot from last year with hotels averaging a low $70 per night. Meanwhile, two Alberta provinces – Banff (a newcomer to the list) and Edmonton – take the number seven and eight spots this year. Rounding out the list are Fort Lauderdale (also new) and Las Vegas, two warmer weather destinations that are ideal for a long weekend getaway.

“Much like last year, the majority of travellers are looking to spend Family Day fairly close to home,” said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, vice-president of the Hotwire Group. “But the great thing about this year is that ‘most popular’ doesn’t necessarily translate into ‘most expensive.’ In fact, travellers looking to visit these hot destinations can do so at lower prices than last year.”
