Responsible Travel Redefined
Just one day to go before the next #TravelWebcastWednesday on Aug. 12, during which leaders in the field of sustainable, responsible tourism will have their say.
Four tourism industry stakeholders will assemble for the webcast starting at 1:00 p.m. EST sharp, to discuss these crucial issues of the tourism industry – an industry which has been an agent of over-tourism in the recent past.
But this year is of course much different, and over-tourism is the last thing to be worried about at present. Following the onset of COVID-19, the rapid shutdown of businesses and traffic brought a surprise reprieve to the natural world for a few quiet weeks. While many people were struggling to deal with the new reality, animal life briefly thrived in a cleaner, greener world. It looked like an unexpected benefit for advocates of responsible tourism.
But was it? Since then, the vastly reduced volume of travel has impacted the conservation efforts of responsible tourism operations, as funds from travellers dwindled to a trickle. What are some of the other effects on sustainable tourism that have been rendered by the pandemic?
Will COVID-19 change the definition of sustainable travel? Can sustainability goals set prior to the pandemic still be met? Will Covid even change the way that people travel responsibly? And will over-tourism rise to be an issue again?
These are some of the questions that will be considered by leading stakeholders of sustainable tourism businesses, who will be presenters in the upcoming #TravelWebcastWednesday on Aug. 12.
These include Brett Tollman, CEO of The Travel Corporation, the creators and operators of the TreadRight Foundation, whose prime directive is “Make Travel Matter.”
Tollman will start the webcast in a one-to-one interview format, followed by three other travel industry stakeholders in a panel discussion.
These include Cedar Swan, the CEO of Adventure Canada, specialists in responsible travel to Canada’s Arctic and East Coast; Rhea Simms, program manager Asia-Pacific for Planeterra, connecting social enterprises to the tourism marketplace; and Jodi Manning, director of marketing for Cool Effect, a platform for the support of carbon-reducing projects around the world.
