Members of SeaWorld San Diego’s Rescue Team are caring for an oiled sea lion affected by the recent tragedy in Santa Barbara, known as the Refugio Beach oil spill. The sea lion is a female estimated to be between one and four years old. She came into the Center extremely lethargic, emaciated and with a large volume of oil all over her body, face and flippers. SeaWorld’s Rescue Team immediately administered hydration to the sea lion, took a blood sample and is currently in the process of washing the oil off. She will be monitored and animal care specialists and veterinarians are cautiously optimistic about her chances for survival and recovery. In the meantime, the Unified Command for this spill has not requested SeaWorld to deploy to Santa Barbara, but SeaWorld will remain standing by in the event they are called upon.
