Minor Hotels brings its style of hospitality to Canada

If you haven’t heard of Minor Hotels, you soon will as the company, which has 540 hotels in 56 countries, brings its hospitality style to Canada.

Running things here, will be Lakshan Samarasinghe, Global Assistant Director of Sales, North America for Minor Hotels; marking the first time the company has had someone representing them and telling the company’s story in Canada.

In a recent conversation with Travel Press Today (TPT), Samarasinghe observed that he sees “lots of opportunity” in the Canadian market moving forward. And make no mistake about it, Minor Hotels is not unknown here, with Samarasinghe telling TPT that already a number of key travel management companies (TMCs) are selling Minor Hotels.

Eight luxury brands

What Samarasinghe is looking to do is to get the message out about what Minor Hotels and its eight brands offer to the larger agency community here in Canada.

During a recent visit to TPT’s offices in Toronto, Samarasinghe was joined by Willemijn van den Dungen, Director of Sales, Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam, who offered an update on one of Amsterdam’s most celebrated luxury hotels which has hosted royal celebrations, global conventions and welcomed a host of distinguished travellers over the course of its 150-year history.

The hotel has 402 rooms and suites and is located in the city centre on Dam Square overlooking the Royal Palace and a short walk from the city’s railway station, as well as museums and shopping districts.

About Minor Hotels

Minor Hotels owns, manages and operates a diverse portfolio of over 540 hotels, resorts and branded residences across 56 countries. Flexible and adaptive to market trends, it drives growth through its eight hotel brands, alongside a collection of related hospitality businesses and strategic partnerships with other leading hotel brands worldwide.

Led by its flagship, luxury brand, Anantara Hotels & Resorts, Minor Hotels has established itself as a global force in the hospitality industry. The continued growth of Anantara and Avani Hotels & Resorts, and the acquisition of brands such as Tivoli Hotels & Resorts, Oaks Hotels, Resorts & Suites, NH Hotels, nhow Hotels, NH Collection and Elewana has placed the company in key markets throughout the world.

With its roots in Asia, Minor Hotels’ historic success story spans nearly five decades. The company’s origins stretch back to 1967 when William E. Heinecke — then only 17 years old — founded Minor Holdings – which was named as a nod to the budding entrepreneur’s youthful age.

A successful expansion

In the years that followed, Heinecke expanded Minor across a variety of industries by creating innovative brands and strategically acquiring companies to fortify the portfolio.

1978 marked the first hotel venture: Royal Garden Resort in Pattaya. Since that first small but significant step, the Minor Hotels team has grown the hospitality enterprise into an international leader, currently boasting over 80,000 rooms across more than 500 hotels in the world’s leading resort and urban destinations.

Today, Minor Hotels is part of publicly listed Minor International (MINT) – one of the largest hospitality and leisure companies in the Asia-Pacific region. MINT is also well known for its international retail and lifestyle brands, and its subsidiary, Minor Food Group, is one of world’s largest restaurant companies with more than 2,100 outlets in 20 countries.

Over the next two years, Samarasinghe told TPT, Minor Hotels is planning to expand its hotel holdings with the addition of another 200 hotels and is looking at expanding in India.
