Air Canada & Transat adjust schedules as Liberia’s airport remains closed

As a result of runway damage sustained by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Sara, the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Costa Rica will be closed until at least Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024 to ensure runway conditions are safe for takeoff and landing.

Operations have been suspended at Liberia International Airport as of Friday, Nov. 15.

Several tour operators, including Air Canada Vacations, have adjusted their schedules to accommodate passengers and get them home safely.

Air Canada Vacations

Air Canada Vacations is introducing a Goodwill Policy to offer customers travelling to Liberia, Costa Rica between Nov. 15 – 25, 2024, the reassurance and flexibility to change their booking.

Passengers whose flights have been affected will be contacted by Air Canada Vacations to review other travel options. Please visit the Air Canada app for details on your revised itinerary. Also, customers headed to Liberia, Costa Rica in the upcoming days or those who are at destination, should monitor their email or phone (or any other method of communication selected when booking) to receive updates about changes to their travel itinerary. Customers who are at destination may also see the hotel front desk for updates on departure information.

Customers affected will be offered the following options:

Modify your booking

You may modify your booking by selecting new travel dates or a new destination from those offered by Air Canada Vacations. Note that all modifications to your original booking will incur additional fees.

Future travel credit

If you choose not to travel, you can cancel your booking and receive a full refund in the form of a future travel credit, which will be valid for one year from the originally scheduled departure date and can be applied to any purchase of products offered by Air Canada Vacations.

Sunwing

Sunwing has rescheduled northbound flights originally scheduled for Nov. 15 and Nov. 18 to now depart from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, Costa Rica at the following times:

  • Monday, Nov. 18, 2024 flight WG729 LIR-YUL is now scheduled to depart Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6:00 p.m. local from SJO.

NexusTours.com, Sunwing’s trusted partner in Costa Rica, has been hard at work securing hotel accommodations for our customers and coordinating ground transfers from their hotels to the airport in San José on their revised departure dates. The transfer will take approximately five hours and will be escorted by Sunwing’s local representatives. Our customers are asked to please refer to the Sunwing App for their transfer departure time or see the Sunwing representative (supported by NexusTours.com) at the hotel.

Transat

Flights scheduled for Nov. 20, 2024:

  • Flight TS600 (YUL-LIR) on Nov. 20, 2024: This flight is cancelled. We are currently contacting the affected passengers to inform them of their options.
  • Flight TS601 (LIR-YUL) on Nov. 20, 2024: This flight is delayed until Nov. 21, 2024. Passengers will receive their updated flight schedule shortly.
