It’s Your Day!

Over the years, it has never ceased to amaze me the number of times that some wise pundit has uttered the phrase: Travel Agents Are Dead.

Economics. Mother Nature. Technology. Discounting. New and cumbersome regulations. Commission cuts. Disintermediation. You name it and travel agents have been ‘off-ed’ by it.

However, in the immortal words of Mark Twain (slightly altered for the purposes of this commentary), the rumours of the demise of travel agents have been greatly exaggerated.

I suspect, in hindsight, that those reports have always been fueled by a failure to understand just exactly what it is that good agents do for their customers and how well they do it.

That’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it.

Agents pull together all the various and sundry moving parts of a trip and make them work. Everything dovetails neatly so that the customer doesn’t have a care in the world.

When things go wrong – whatever the cause – then it’s the agent that comes to the rescue and cleans up the mess. And, it should be added, that usually, the client never knows what the agent has had to do to get them out of the jam they’ve found themselves in.

So today’s your day.

I’d suggest you sit back, have a couple of drinks, and relax … on the other hand, you’re all probably too darned busy taking care of your customers to take it easy.
