Hurricane Matthew Heads Towards Florida
After making landfall in Haiti earlier today, officials at the US National Hurricane Center in Miami report that Hurricane Matthew, described as a massive storm, could be headed on a path towards Florida and the southeastern US coast.
The Category 4 hurricane hit Haiti with heavy rain and top sustained winds of nearly 145 mph. and is moving northward. A hurricane warning remains in effect for Jamaica, all of Haiti and portions of Cuba and The Bahamas.
While the hurricane is expected to weaken slightly over the course of the week, tropical storm or hurricane conditions could affect portions of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina later this week or this weekend.
Even if Matthew stays offshore, it’s reported that the Orlando area will likely see tropical storm force winds and heavy rain Thursday night into Friday morning.
In the wake of the storm, several cruise lines have also altered some of their Caribbean itineraries.
