Blue Mountain Introduces Mountaintop Skating
Ontario’s Blue Mountain Resort is getting set to host to another iconic Canadian winter pastime, but with a unique twist.
Crews are busy preparing to open Woodview Mountaintop Skating, a 1.1 km skating path located at the top of the ski hill. More than a traditional skating experience, Woodview will feature an ice skate path that winds through a tree-covered trail that opens to a one-of-a-kind mountaintop view of Georgian Bay.
“We have offered skating on the Mill Pond in the Village for several seasons,” notes Dan Skelton, president and COO of Blue Mountain Resort. “Many of our guests truly enjoy lacing up and getting on the ice as a part of their Blue Mountain getaway. We discovered a hidden opportunity at the top of the mountain where we could take an ice skating experience at Blue and literally elevate it.”
Now much more than a ski or snowboard destination, the team at Blue has become very good at diversifying the resort’s winter offerings. Mountaintop skating will join the growing list of winter activities at Blue which includes the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster, Hike N Tube, snowshoeing and Plunge! Aquatic Centre along with, of course, Ontario’s largest skiable terrain.
The new ice skating path will be located between the top of the Orchard Express and Southern Comfort chairlifts. Blue’s advanced snowmaking infrastructure will be essential in flooding the skate path and the team has invested in a new Zamboni to ensure a smooth and level 1.1km loop for skaters.
“There will be a skating hut at the top where guests can purchase tickets and rent storage lockers as well as skates,” says, Adam McCutcheon, the manager overseeing Blue’s newest winter attraction. “Guests can park at the top of Blue Mountain or swap out their ski equipment for skate equipment and enjoy an all new on-hill experience.”
Woodview Mountaintop Skating is scheduled to open January.
