Meliá Hotels Mostly 100% Operational
Meliá Hotels International reports that its hotels in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Orlando and Miami are 100% operational following Hurricane Irma.
In Cuba, the most significant damage occurred on the northern coast, mainly in The Cayos. Customers from these areas who did not return to their countries of origin prior to the hurricane were promptly transferred to hotels in safer tourist centres and cities such as Camagüey, Varadero, Havana, Trinidad and Cienfuegos, with “impeccable implementation of evacuation protocols.”
The hotels in Havana, Holguin, Santiago de Cuba and Cayo Largo are fully operational. As for the situation in Varadero, Melia hotels suffered minor damage and most are already operating normally, while the rest will re-establish service in the next 24 to 48 hours. Most of the recovery work can be completed in a short time, and in cases where major improvements are needed, they are expected to be finalized prior to the start of the peak season.
Regarding the situation in the Cayos, “it is too soon to make evaluations until we have a proper inventory, but the company intends to begin operations in Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Santa María as soon as possible, with hotels less affected,” Melia says. “From Meliá Hotels International we want to emphasize the professionalism and commitment of our collaborators in all these destinations, and the excellent co-ordination exercised by the authorities, to guarantee at all times the information, security, and maximum possible comfort of our clients and employees.”
