New Dual Citizenship Regulation Takes Effect Sept. 30

A new air travel regulation requiring those with dual citizenships to have a Canadian passport takes effect Sept. 30 and is catching some by surprise, reports the Toronto Star.

Starting Sept. 30, Canadians with dual citizenships will only be allowed to fly into the country if they have a Canadian passport. The regulation is being denounced by some as nothing more than a cash grab.

The initiative is part of Canada’s move to an electronic screening system to step up border security, with The Star reporting that some travellers are only finding out about it at the last minute when trying to board a flight.

Canadian citizens with dual citizenships can currently use the passport of the other country to enter Canada by air when providing proof of residency in Canada, such as a driver’s licence or Canadian citizenship card.
