A Happy Holiday To All

Call it what you will, the first Monday in August is a time to sit back relax and enjoy a holiday. Don’t worry too much about what to call the holiday you’re enjoying because it has different names in different parts of Canada.

Simplest way to describe it is simply to call it the August Civic Holiday.

In Toronto, for example, it’s known as Simcoe Day, however, on the west coast, it’s British Columbia Day; in Saskatchewan, it’s Saskatchewan Day; in New Brunswick, it’s New Brunswick Day; while in Ontario, many towns and city use the holiday to honour a local figure of importance.

Here in Toronto, while the holiday honours John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, it also marks the annual Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival which sees the city come alive as colourfully, costumed revellers take to the streets to the sounds of the music of the Caribbean – definitely lots of fun.
