Lufthansa, Germanwings Expand Capacity
Lufthansa and Germanwings are increasing capacity by 5% for the summer of 2014. Passengers can choose from 235 destinations in 78 countries, including Lufthansa’s four newest gateways in Jakarta, Indonesia; Tokyo’s Haneda Airport; Bodrum, Turkey; and Lamezia Terme, Italy. The summer schedule, which is valid through Oct. 25, 2014, will also add flights from Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Frankfurt to Mexico City. In addition, passengers travelling to Canada will have expanded service to Montreal and Toronto, with flights from both Frankfurt and Munich.
Lufthansa’s long-haul fleet modernization will continue during the summer schedule with delivery of six new intercontinental aircraft. Two new Airbus A380 will bring Lufthansa’s total to 12 and make it possible to increase capacity along the routes from Frankfurt to New York (JFK), Beijing and San Francisco. Lufthansa will add four Boeing 747-8, bringing the fleet total to 14. For the first time, passengers will be able to enjoy the comfort of the “Queen of the Skies” on flights from Frankfurt to Sao Paulo in Brazil, and the new jumbo jet will be flying twice daily to Los Angeles.
The handover of direct flights from Lufthansa to Germanwings is now complete in Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, and Hamburg, from which Germanwings services 24 destinations, including Paris and London.
As of the first day of the summer flight timetable, another 22 direct flights from Dusseldorf will be transferred, bringing the total number of destinations to 68 and making the Rhine capital the largest Germanwings station.
In Berlin, the remaining direct routes flown by Lufthansa from Berlin-Tegel will transition to Germanwings in the summer, bringing the total number of non-stop flights from the River Spree to over 40 destinations. Germanwings does not operate via Lufthansaãs Frankfurt and Munich hubs.
