Jumbo Glacier Resort Derailed
It’s touted as the next great four-season resort for British Columbia, but construction of Jumbo Glacier Resort is not yet a sealed deal.
The mega-resort has done extensive planning over the past two decades for its construction in the Purcell Mountain range near the town of Invermere and many approvals hurdles have been cleared.
But the aboriginal rights of the local First Nations have recently been raised in protest to the resort. The Ktunaxa Nation says the area set aside for Jumbo is known as Qat’muk, or “the place for the gathering of grizzly bear spirits.” The lawyer for the Ktunaxa Nation has thus asked the BC Supreme Court to set aside the approvals for building Jumbo. Lawyer Peter Grant said approvals for the resort violate the religious rights to the aboriginals there. Stay tuned.
