New Flight Centre survey shows 42% of Canadians prioritize family vacations

Despite economic challenges dominating headlines, Canadians’ passion for travel tells a different story.

A YouGov survey, commissioned by Flight Centre Canada, reveals that more than 60 per cent of Canadians surveyed have travel plans in the coming months. This insight not only reflects a strong desire for global exploration, but also highlights the inherent value Canadians place on their wanderlust.

To meet this demand, Flight Centre unveils its Big Red Sale, promising savings of up to 50 per cent on a variety of travel packages, from tropical getaways and family-friendly adventures to cruise explorations.

Prioritizing cost and value

In an inflationary landscape, 64 per cent of Canadians cite cost as the most crucial factor guiding their travel decisions.

According to the data, women, in particular, (66 per cent compared to 55 per cent) are attracted to package deals that incorporate additional perks, reflecting a savvy approach to maximizing travel experiences while remaining financially prudent.

Key travel preferences

  • Beach and family vacations lead the way, both at 42 per cent
  • Followed closely by budget travel at 41%
  • Quiet travel (29%) and cultural travel (27%) are also gaining traction

Millennials (50 per cent) and Gen X (48 per cent) value family bonding, often favouring family vacations more than other generations. For Gen X (50 per cent) often juggling multiple responsibilities, beaches offer the most preferred vacation. Similarly, Gen Z (44 per cent) also leans towards beach destinations, seeking an escape from the digital world that dominates their daily lives. This preference highlights their desire for tranquility and a break from constant connectivity.

In contrast, Boomers (46 per cent) and the Silent Generation (42 per cent) emphasize budget travel deals, reflecting a shift in their priorities from accumulating wealth to accumulating experiences.

“The data reveals a powerful narrative: despite financial pressures, Canadians aren’t willing to give up their love for travel,” said Chadd Andre, executive vice-president at Flight Centre Canada. “It also shows strong family values drive Canadians’ vacation choices. And, what remains clear is that for many, travel has become a key part of how they connect, reflect, and grow.”
