Meghan Trainor makes a splash on Utopia of the Seas

Fitting for a ship that was designed for making memories during short getaways, Royal Caribbean International turned the naming ceremony for Utopia of the Seas into a naming party in Port Canaveral, reports Travel Press Today’s Ann Ruppenstein, who’s onboard attending the festivities.

The celebration featured a performance by the ship’s godmother, Meghan Trainor, who played an acoustic version of ‘All About That Bass’ on ukulele, as well as a wide-spanning set by DJ Ruckus and Rev. Run, one of the founding members of the influential hip hop group Run-DMC, that had the audience — and Royal Caribbean International executives — on their feet.

“We’ve come together to celebrate and that’s what Utopia of the Seas is all about — celebrations — they always mark significant moments and people in our lives and moments make memories,” said Royal Caribbean International president and chief executive Michael Bayley. “And that is at the heart of Royal Caribbean, every Royal Caribbean vacation is all about memories.”

Whereas the typical length for a cruise is seven nights, the sixth vessel in the line’s Oasis Class series offers three-night weekend and four-night weekday vacations, designed to make it an appealing option for the new-to-cruise segment.

Royal Caribbean Group president and chief executive Jason Liberty said, “our mission was to create a Utopian playground on the ocean, deliver the perfect short getaways and ultimate vacation experiences filled world class entertainment, fulfilled activities for all and mouthwatering culinary and beverage.”

In order to put things into perspective, Liberty said that over 10 million working hours went into building Utopia of the Seas.

“I now bless this ship and everyone who sails on it,” added Grammy Award-winning Trainor, who was joined in the crowd by her family as well as 52 fans who won a spot on the naming ceremony cruise. “I’ve never been able to vacation on a ship like this, and neither has any of my family… my son is going to have the best trip of his whole life.”

One of the new features on the ship is Royal Railway – Utopia Station, an immersive train car dining experience. All of Utopia’s itineraries call on Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas. Stay tuned for more coverage.
