Study Finds Travellers Intend To Use AI For Trip Planning

In its latest tracking study of American traveller, Longwoods International reports that 32% of them are likely to use Chat GPT as a tool for planning their next trip. For those who don’t know, Chat GPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot technology developed by research company Open AI.

Longwoods International also found that 27% of respondents to its tracking study were not aware of Chat GPT.

We fully expect similar early adoption by the industry and travellers to the potential benefits of employing artificial intelligence in travel planning and decision making.”

Another emerging technology travel trend that Londwoods International reported in its latest tracking study was the shift to electric vehicles, with 37% of travellers likely to use an electric vehicle on their next trip. And 79% of travellers reported that traveling with friends and family brings them closer together, and 65% say they appreciate travel more after living through COVID-19 travel limitations and restrictions.

Highlights of the study include:

  • 32% of American travellers say they are likely to use Chat GPT as a tool for planning their next trip.  In contrast, 27% of respondents say they were not aware of Chat GPT. Given the infancy of this technology, this marks a very rapid rise in early adoption and utilization.
  • The shift to electric vehicles is another emerging technology travel trend, with 17% of travellers indicating they are VERY likely to use an electric vehicle on their next trip, and 37% saying it’s at least somewhat likely.
  • 79% of American travellers reported that travelling with friends and family brings them closer together, and 65% say they appreciate travel more after living through COVID-19 travel limitations and restrictions.
  • 62% report that travel means more to them now after having experienced COVID-19 travel limitations and restrictions.
  • The economy continues to hold the greatest influence on changing travel plans, despite the slight easing of inflation lately, as 57% of American travellers indicate inflation will impact (30%) or greatly impact (27%) their decision to travel in the next six months. This is up three points over the prior month.
  • 54% indicated the cost of airfare will impact their decision to travel in the next six months (down seven points since April), while 49% say gas prices will do the same (up one point since April).
  • Once again, overall travel demand remains near record territory as 91% of American travellers still report plans to take a trip in the next six months (unchanged since April)
