Quintana Roo Continues Its Reopening

The state of Quintana Roo has updated its epidemiological traffic light system in the northern region of the state to yellow, allowing for more public spaces to reopen.

Governor Carlos Joaquín González announced the move that applies to the northern region of the state of Quintana Roo, which includes Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos and Holbox.

However, the state’s southern region will remain orange.

This transition is mainly due to two key factors: the decrease in active cases of COVID-19 and the region’s medical and hospital capacity.

This represents a positive development in the economic and tourist recovery of the region, which will now allow an occupancy of up to 60% in hotels, restaurants, shopping centres, theme parks, spas and golf courses, among other travel services and public spaces. Public beaches will also reopen and some, but not all, archaeological sites will reopen.

The governor pointed out that during the transition to yellow, the reactivation must be gradual, orderly and responsible, without relaxing health and hygiene measures in order to protect local citizens as well as travellers. Protecting the public’s health remains the top priority in this re-opening strategy.

Since the beginning of the health crisis, the state authorities of Quintana Roo, including the Tourism Board, implemented strict hygiene and sanitation protocols to guarantee the health and well-being of all its citizens and visitors; from airports, ground transportation, hotels, restaurants and recreational centres.

Regarding the tourism situation in the state, the director of the Quintana Tourism Board, Darío Flota, said: “We are working hard to recover and increase the number of tourists coming to our destinations, and we are starting to see the numbers go up, both in the air connectivity from different parts of the world, and in the increase in hotel occupancy. We hope to have a very good last quarter of the year.”
